Frequently Asked Questions
What type of bamboo are the straws made from?
Whangee bamboo! Whangee refers to any of over forty Asian grasses of the genus Phyllostachys, a genus of bamboos. They are a hardy evergreen plant from Japan, China and the Himalayas whose woody stems are sometimes used to make canes and umbrella handles. The word derives from the Chinese (Mandarin) huáng lí. It can also refer to a cane made from whangee. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whangee)
Do pandas eat Whangee bamboo?
A Panda’s diet consists of 99% bamboo. Since Whangee bamboo refers to over 40 different kinds of grasses or bamboos, it is realistic that pandas eat whangee bamboo. However, bamboos grow 3-5 feet per year, so the effect harvesting the bamboo plan has on the environment that require it is minimal if anything.
Where is the bamboo from?
Our bamboo straws come from Anji, China.
Anji County is a county in the prefecture-level city of Huzhou in northwestern Zhejiang province, People's Republic of China, with a population of 461,800 as of the end of 2013.
